In April 2020, I worked at Itäkeskus shopping mall in Helsinki. The original idea was to ask people at the mall to participate in the off-painting session, but Covid-19 changed my plan.

De-painting variations

The exhibition deals with the manifestation of the subject, and thus the artist's identity, between the self-image and the public space. De-painting evokes the impression of the reverse process of painting. However, it was a photograph printed on a canvas as a digital print resembling a painting. Off-painting is done by hand with a liquid and a brush, emphasizing the idea of the painting event or imitating that event in reverse.

The photograph gradually becomes more and more like a painting in off-painting process, while the ink is released from its mimetic function and takes on a new, more material form. Retrieving ink and placing it under a photograph / painting suggests the idea of the indestructibility of the material. The rotation and transformation and re-materialization of matter can be seen, in this context, both concrete and symbolic, as a “return to reality” or a “return to reality” from the world of hopes and desires.

Through off-painting demonstrations, during the exhibition, I looked at how the site of the work and the situation affect the formation of the work and what all the self-image is thus connected to.
