Artist’s Statement

Backround of my art

I was born in Laukaa 1931 in the Central Finland, near Jyväskylä town. I studied pedagogy in Jyväskylä, Joensuu and Helsinki University, where I graduated for a teacher and student instructor. I worked as a teacher nearly 40 years in Pieksämäki, Joroinen and Lappeenranta. I taught mainly children of 13 - 16 years old but also adults.

I took part in the juried exhibition the first time in 1968. Main part of my production is traditional graphic and portraits of children, but it also includes carvings, computer collages and different short video films, mainly video art. I have received several prizes of my video films. My portrait pastels received a prize in Antibes, France.

I has written poems and wrote art, travel and literature reviews and articles for different newspapers. In addition I have illustrated some books, eg. Savitaipale histories. In 1994 my book, biography of Väinö Rautio called “Väinö Rautio's Vyborg” was published and two video films based on this book. Moreover several of my articles have been published in different books.

In the year 2011 I published a book of poetry “The Years are passing on” and my daughter Katri Jokipelto illustrated it.

I have had solo exhibitions but also have participated in group of exhibitions in Finland and abroad, eg. in Sweden, USA, Italy, Spain, Russia and France. I 'm living in South Karelia whose beatiful nature has given a great inspiration for me and my husband, painter Matti J. Rautio.
