Bio

Sculptures have a central role in Heta Laitakari’s (b. 1975) art.Laitakari’s light sculptures create a pious and harmonious atmosphere. Forest is often referred to as a sacred place for Finns. Laitakari’s sculptures provide their viewers with a small shrine, a soothing space to contemplate man’s twofold relationship with nature.

Another important thread in Laitakari’s production are drawings which are based on watercolor, ink and felt pen. The drawings explore the same themes as the sculptures, and the focus lies in man’s problematic relationship with nature. Laitakari doesn’t usually portray the human figure, but man’s presence is referred to metonymically by his creations. In many of the drawings the festoon-like ornaments bring to mind the branches of the light sculptures.
