Artist’s Statement

In my working I mainly study human psyche, human rights, and environmental ethics, and my exhibitions are often taking stand for nature. My narrative starts from my Fenno-Ugrian roots and how it appears in my art. As a visual artist, I make paintings, sculptures, installations, media works and environmental art with themes of my roots.

In the Lapland area I work as an Artist and curator in the local artists community of contemporary and environmental art called Art Äkäslompolo Association. I work also in Estonia with Fenno-Ugric themes.

I am a member of the Finnish Painters' Association, the Lapland Artists' Association and the Helsinki Artists' Association and also the President of that association from year 2021.

Bio

Satu Kalliokuusi is a professional Finnish visual artist who is active in all parts of Finland and in the international art world. Her art attaches to the critical tip of contemporary art. Kalliokuusi looks at themes, such as mining disputes and forest policies,  global, local and Earth intersection. Kalliokuusi has dealt with these topics, for example, in the periphery of the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park, with art of national importance. At the same time, the works are topical in the field of international environmental policy contemporary art.

The recent theme of Kalliokuusis' arts has risen to the subject of Finno-Ugric folklore about the relationship between human and nature, where the difference between human been, visible nature and spirits of nature has led. Kalliokuusi raises the traditions and themes of the tradition with language of contemporary art and in the context of contemporary culture, so that art experiences have the opportunity to reach a sense of cultural continuity, the connection to rich cultural heritage of Fenno-Ugric nations. This theme is dealt with in its interesting transcultural attitude. Her art is influenced by other Fenno-Ugric cultures: Estonian and Eastern Finland and nature of the Lapland.

Kalliokuusi has developed its own way of working in visual arts for decades, investigating, among other things, nature and plant pigments. This approach has been up -to -date with both the turn of new material philosophy and in the context of the art world.

Kalliokuusi is an active and renewed visual artist. In addition, he works as a curator and so -called engine in many projects that renew contemporary art and communities that bring together artists and local communities.
