Joel Karppanen is a Finnish artist whose photographs and videos converse on topics around ordinariness, human environment and the urban-rural dichotomy. Karppanen concentrates on personal, in-depth projects. His practice is founded on ideals of social realism and humanist photography with contemporary discourse. When working, he strives to find magic and beauty in commonplace things.
Despite his young age, Joel Karppanen has received recognition including New Photo Journalist Award and Young Hero Grant in 2017. Karppanen's work has been exhibited e.g. in Helsinki, London and Mänttä and his works can be found in public and private collections. Karppanen's first monograph 'Finnish Pastoral' was published in 2018.
