Artist’s Statement

I am a sculptor who studied music, mathematics and visual arts.

My recent public works are architectural sculptures the size of one person. The surface and shape delimit the outer and inner space, which are equally important in my works, but are emphasized in different ways depending on the experiencer's position in relation to the sculpture.

The material determines the mutual relationship between the spaces: the more airy the material, the more balanced the spaces are with each other and less dependent on whether the experiencer is inside the work, outside - or both.

Through my sculptures, I study how the subject, material(s) and implementation of the work - context-bound - affect the experience.

Bio

The choice of material for the planned work - or a set of works - is central and linked to the context, size and shape.

I am especially interested in public art, which at its best binds space, environment and community.

My studies in mathematics and music led me to think about the "three-dimensional score". Together with FT, Mum Atte Tenkanen, we created a "Vector Sequece Model", where temporal art (music) turns into spatial art (sculpture) through vectors. Attached is a link to the Bridges 2016 article and exhibition: "D3= 3D", Gallery in Katariinan Studio 2016.

Also included are two independent works by Jukka Mäkilä (Corona and Quinta Essentia), whose starting point was the installation exhibition "Plus = Minus" that I realized in the Wäinö Aaltonen museum in 2000. The work consisted of nine spaces - formed by a silver-plated, glass-blown boy (100 cm) - under nine square windows. The exhibition also included the 200 cm tall "IsoPoika".
