Visual artist and painter, Doctor of Fine Arts (Academy of Fine Arts, Helsinki 2022) Katja Tukiainen was born in 1969 in Pori, Finland. In the mid of 1990s she studied painting at the Venice Academy of Fine Arts (Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia), graduated in 1996 with the Master of Arts from the University of Art and Design Helsinki, and year 2009 with Master of Fine Arts from Academy of Fine Arts Helsinki, where she continued directly to the doctorate of fine arts and defended her artistic doctoral thesis called The Girl Army –Narrative painting in space in the spring of 2022 (Academy of Fine Arts Helsinki, 170 pages).

Tukiainen has held several solo exhibitions, participated in numerous group exhibitions and published artist's monographs and comic books in Finland and abroad. Her exhibitions and painting installations have been exhibited in both galleries and museums. In several of her works, Tukiainen has focused her interest on combining the visual narration of painting and comic art in ways that she has been piloting since the 1990s. She has brought experimental comics and narrative painting into the field of Finnish visual art, even though the reception of her shakedown of the pictorial narratives in the 1990s was sometimes not only enthusiastic but also critical.

Tukiainen's important debut group exhibitions in Finland were the Youth Exhibition in 2001 and the 106th annual exhibition of the Artists' Association of Finland in the same year. She held his first significant solo exhibition in 1998 at Galleria Bakeliittibambi in Helsinki. Bakeliittbambi gallerists Raimo and Maarit Huttunen's donation collection exhibition opened at the HAM Helsinki Art Museum on March 8, 2024. The exhibition was called "Bambi Forever", one of Tukiainen's oil paintings (2005) in the collection. Already in 1998 and 1999, in her solo exhibitions at Galleria Bakelittibambi, she tested the limits of paintings' and comics' story telling. Her paintings represented the comics panel's screen enlargements and her oil paintings were fourteen meter long painting strips.

Tukiainen continues to examine the narration of a paintings placed in a spaces. Her visual art works continuously with the theme of the joint representation of image and word. Her works are included in several public and private art collections.
