Artist’s Statement

My works are more imaces and reflection of state of my mind. They are constructed from layers of memory and experiences. Organic and geometric structures as well as geometrically spiralling forms have been recurring themes in my works for several years.
Clay as a means of expression, physical contact with the material is a tool to systematize and rationalise my thoughts.

Bio

I started my art studies at the Kankaanpää School of Art 1972. 1982 I graduated as Master of Arts from the University of Art and Design Helsinki, majoring in ceramic art.
Since 1974, I have participated in numerous exhibitions of visual art, and since 1982 in symposia, workshops and exhibitions in my field both in Finland and abroad. I have staged several my own exhibitions. I have also had joint exhibitions with my twin sister, glass artist Taru Syrjänen, for example: at Willa Mac in Tampere, at Gallery Saskia in Tampere, at Design Museum in Helsinki, at Häme Museum in Tampere, at Finnish Glass Museum in Riihimäki....
I am creating most of my works at my studio in Tampere. Ceramic residency programs abroad have provided important variation for my work. I have worked for example in the following ceramic residency programs: Archie Bray Foundation Helena Montana USA, AIR -Vallauris Vallauris France, FLICAM Fuping China.
2015-18 I designed brick tile works for 4 facades to Vuores, Tampere.
My current interest is in 3D printing and printable materials.
