Sound artist: Jaakko Autio / Kutsu Band: Vocals: Jarkko Makkonen. Accordion: Anne-Maarit Hyttinen. Concert kantele and vocals: Saila Kinnunen / Recording: Hilla Väyrynen / Publicity: Anne-Maarit Hyttinen / Exhibition supervised by: Municipality summer employees / Thanks: Tohmajärvi residency.
POPULUS installation reflects on Karelia, particularly a small North Karelian village called Kutsu. Karelia is suffering from population decline, which is why the village pub in Tohmajärvi has been out of operation since spring. The work brings the local pub to life, featuring the local folk music band called KUTSU and reflections on culture and local identity. The installation includes three songs by the KUTSU band, musicians’ rehearsals, and an interview conducted by Koti-Karjala magazine. It is recommended that visitors to the exhibition spend time in the space that would normally be spent, for example, enjoying a pint.
In addition to the POPULUS sound installation, there are also paintings by Mika Vesilahti displayed on interior panels. The joint exhibition is called KUTSU.
KUTSU is open every weekday from July 12 to July 27, 2023, from 10 am to 4 pm. The exhibition is supervised by the municipality’s summer workers.
