Artist’s Statement

Through wondering introspection, Gelain investigates human existentialism drawing from the conceptual and emotional, symbolic and dreamlike sphere, often setting and inspiring the quest in rural and natural scenarios. Intimate perceptions and primal pulses lead to probing liminal spaces, inner conflicts and redemption, merging into a synergy of form, content and intention.

Artistic research becomes a continuum of life itself, where the edges between practice and experiential tool are inextricably intertwined. Her analysis is based on authentic impressions and (infra)confrontation, recalling untethered resources of thought and cognition of the others starting from ourselves.
Stretching a thread between consciousness and intuition, between vision and figuration, the reflection oscillates through (self)analysis, awareness and the search for empathic balance.

Not mere question for others, also the artist during the process attempts to acknowledge overshadowed metaphysical and immanent dynamics of being and thus discerning contradictions and reversing conflicts; lucid to accept the discomfort for true change in a voluntary and active journey that will lead to different catharsis of being and, as a result, how we can (co)exist in reality.

‘Nubivago in existence ~ overflowing, writhing, turning inside-out ~ glimpsing a pattern in endless alteration ~ feel reality without understanding ~ thought to the point of appearing illusion ~ with art as viaticum’

With a background in fine arts, Gelain explores subjects and figurations through different languages and means of communication, urging to best express the original vision. In recent years, the artist has experimented with video art and in general an interdisciplinary approach to research and practice, leading her to work with photography, performance, installation, poetry, site-specific art.
