Jósefina Alanko: Ghost (s) no.2-4
In Jósefina Alanko’s “Ghosts” series materials create a multi-layered symbolism. At first glance, the soft surfaces of cotton rope and linen convey a feeling of closeness and warmth. The textures attract and their delicate forms suggest something approachable yet mysterious. “Ghosts” also encourage us to confront our anxieties, suggesting the possibility of healing and self-discovery within layers of fear. The chains symbolize the weight of the past, embedding ephemeral forms in experiences of trauma and memory. The painted surface, hidden beneath a layer of glass, is visible only under the right conditions and refers to hidden aspects of self. Like ghosts, they “come out” only under the right circumstances. Together, these materials and techniques form a dialogue between the past, present, and unseen, capturing the complexity of invisible bodies and the weight they carry.
