Artist’s Statement
Heikki Vastiala is a sound artist whose artistic practice focuses on creating site-specific sound installations. In his pieces, physical environments and conceptual themes are transformed into experiential soundscapes that combine aesthetic sensitivity, careful attention to detail, a sense of play, and versatile technical skills. As an artist, Vastiala sees his role as revealing aspects of the world around us—both physical and mental—that we might not notice, or might not even be able to imagine, without art.
Vastiala’s sound installations have been presented at, among others, the Art Museums of Rauma, Kemi, and Imatra, as well as the Institute of Materials Science of Uzbekistan. He has also created permanent sound installations for Rauma Maritime Museum and Karin Kampus educational building. In addition to his work as a sound artist, Vastiala is active as an electronic musician, sound designer, and educator.
