Minna Suoniemi: Girl Smoking

GIRL SMOKING, 2009, Video Installation, 2 m x 1,4 m x 2,4 m room, flat screen, smoke machine

Girl Smoking portrays a young woman smoking one cicarette in a calm manner. The image replays the iconic film scene of the mysterious, self - contained female protagonist. The role of a smoking woman in the history of cinema has been that of the not-so- helpless one, even dangerous creature, who’s dusky eyes reflect some hidden sorrows or longings. The installation places the viewer in this scene with light smoke lingering around outside of the everlasting cinematic scene.
