Artist’s Statement

The theme of my work is memory/memories and nostalgia - not only as a sentimental feeling but as a cultural phenomena. I'm interested in issues of temporality and memory as a mode of philosophical inquiry.
My work is based on photography. Taking a picture initiates a process of interacting between the physical and metaphysical, personal and cultural landscapes. I apply various techniques and approaches in my work, aiming to evoke associations and create multi layered narratives which bring together meanings and memories from different times and places.

Bio

Visual artist Jaana Lönnroos (MA) lives and works between Finland and Italy. Her practice combines international projects, exhibitions, artist residencies, and teaching. She holds a Master of Arts degree from the University of Art and Design Helsinki (2007), and has also studied at the Queensland College of Art in Australia (BA) and at the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki (postgraduate studies).

The cornerstone of Lönnroos’s artistic practice is a deep interest in history and cultural contexts. Her works draw on art history as well as historical figures, events, and phenomena, which she examines through the broader frameworks of time, memory, and cultural continuity.

Lönnroos works primarily with a photographic approach. Photography provides the basis of reality upon which her works are constructed. She engages with her images in a tactile and interpretative process, through which the final artworks take shape.

Lönnroos has participated in numerous international artist residencies in Italy, Australia, Spain, Mexico, and the United States. She has also worked as a curator, producing exhibitions of Australian contemporary art in Finland (Kerava Art Museum and Rovaniemi Art Museum, 1993 and 2018), and contributed to the Heinävesi Art Church summer exhibitions between 2010 and 2013.

In 2008, Lönnroos founded the Villa Sillanpää artist residency in Heinävesi, Finland, which she directed until 2022. Since then, her work has been mainly based in Italy.
