A BRIEF CHARACTERISTIC OF MY ARTISTIC PRACTICE
I am working as artist photographer, since 1990.
Main themes of my early works evolve around humanity, history and food, seen in a perspective confronting the past to the contemporary, and treated in a very abstract, fictional way. Images contain different layers of meanings focusing on their interdependencies, and reveal a hidden and unexpected symbolism in the use of different scales. In all of these projects I was using experimental tecniques in photography, which were important part of the searching process both in conceptual and tecnical level.
GOURMET FICTION, 1995, 8 photos and installation , size 150x180 cm
Background to this work is in my long lasting interest to gastronomy and it ́s history. My aim is to create strong and direct contact to food materials by photographies. I wanted to put audience into an uncomfortable situation, between attractive and repulsive, between beautifull and coarse. To achieve this I found a special printing technique where insted of the negative I used a thin slice of some raw transparent food material. I have used no camera nor film to produce the originals of these images.This technique really shows our food in a new light. Different structures of food materials appear in a large scale, creating in images some surprising emotions and symbolical meanings.
THEATRO ANATOMICO, 1996, 15 light boxes, size 80x100 cm
Site-specific project, installation in a deserted tower in the very center of the city.The dictionary of symbols offers several definitions of a tower. One of them is "power" and "reaching above the average level"; another is "philosophical reflection."
The third meaning is the image of a man.This work tries to show our ignorance in the human anatomy. For most of us, everything we have under our skin is unknown and mysterious. This work looks for a correspondence between various biomorphic structures and makes us think about this “blank area”.
FLASCHENPOST, 1997, installation with polaroid emulsion transfer on food
Research of symbols and meanings of our everyday food. Technicaly made as reversion of the process in previous works, so that the picture is transfered directly to food.
DE TE FABULA NARRATUR, 1999, 12 photos, size 43x50 cm
This work is dealing with the confusion and search for identity in contemporary society. Comparison of the idea of heroism, from antique to modern times, through the symbolism of human body and food.
The last period of my work was strongly influenced by meeting new culture and society in Balkan area, (mainly in Serbia and Montenegro), since 1997. My artistical method shifted towards the documentary approach, using subjects from the real life, inspired by the appearance of different phenomenas. Conceptualy my work focused from the material more towards the immaterial substance. New themes on the philosophical and spiritual level in life arose, searching for the deapest meaning of human existence.
IN THE HAND OF GOD, 2000-2003, 27 photos, sizes 100x100, 70x100, 150x100 cm
In the new environment, I have selected the area of spiritual life to focus my attention and resarch on, and a consistency of a munk communities in the centuries old, but still intensely living serbian orthodox monasteries.
Idea of this project was to capture the presence of spiritual existence through the psychological insight of the state of soul and signs of the faith in different personalities of monks, and orthodox people.
On a larger scale, as well to capture cultural and spiritual richness of the Orthodox monasteries in Balkan area and their irradiating, peaceful influence for people around them, and to the inner quality of their existence
