Artist’s Statement

Seela Petra is a graphic artist and animation artist whose work brings together traditional and contemporary techniques across drawing, printmaking, and media art.

Her career spans over four decades and includes 40 exhibitions, with works held in 26 public collections, among them the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma and EMMA – Espoo Museum of Modern Art. Her large-scale public artworks and animated moving-image works have received wide recognition, including the award-winning short film Drops in Mind, which won Best Short Film at the ARFF Amsterdam Film Festival in 2023.

In recent years, Seela Petra has released a series of animated short films that combine printmaking, drawing, and moving image. These works have already reached nearly 80,000 viewers.

Current information

2021
New spatial art work called "Aura", opened April, 2021. This work sparks imagination and gives positive vibes to ordinary days in a residential house.  Art work "Aura" is based on a collection of Finnish legends, now regarded as the Finnish national epic called  "Kalevala". Aura consist of three walls, ten characters and beautiful pink light coming through a window.

Espoo Museum of Modern Art: Seela Petra’s artwork introduces 69 characters in Tapiola’s new bike parking.
