Artist’s Statement

Why did you become an artist?

I became an artist in order to combine digital surrealism with bio-based and recycled materials. My practice is grounded in a holistic and multi-layered approach to interpreting reality, in which technology functions as a tool for articulating visual and material experiential phenomena.

What themes do you usually address?

In my work, I examine the relationship between organic and digital environments, and how technological processes shape materiality, space, and experience. My works often address structures and systems and their transformation into visual and material forms.

What is most important to you in your art?

Central to my artistic practice is a process-based and material-oriented approach. I seek to develop working methods in which digital production techniques and physical materials form a complementary whole. Responsibility and critical consideration of material choices are integral to my practice.

What are the foundations of your artistic practice?

My practice is based on an experimental and research-oriented approach. I work with digital methods such as vector graphics and printing techniques, combined with bio-based and recycled materials. My works often take the form of series or modular structures, in which a single visual starting point is developed across different forms, scales, and contexts.

Bio

Veera Vartiainen's (alias VV-machine, born 1990) artistic practice ranges from digital art to using recycled materials . Her work consists of surreal vector based imagery, merging digital with analog and researching the technical possibilities for sustainable creative processes. After a decade working and living abroad, VV-machine's art delves into how different perspectives shape our understanding of the combination of emotion and technology. As a visual artist, she has seen firsthand how cultural and conceptual differences influence the way technology affects us on an emotional level.

Since returning to Finland, she's focused on her surreal "Vector Meditation" series and festival installations. Her commissions include label illustrations for Fat Lizard Brewing Company, site- specific works for Purkutaide 2025 and Kosmos Festival (2023–2025), a large installation for Solstice Festival 2024, and illustrations for Visio Festival 2022. In 2023, she was chosen for the Kunsthaus Jägermeister Art Residency and is curating the Kosmos Festival 2025 gallery. Her work has been showcased in solo and group exhibitions across Finland and Europe, supported by the Arts Promotion Centre Finland (Taike) and the City of Helsinki.
