Artist’s Statement

As a textile artist and designer, I am interested in drawing parallels between art, craft, and industrial products, and in the dialogue that emerges between them.
I find inspiration in juxtaposing the new and the old, the broken and the whole — also in an immaterial sense. Art and design feed one another; art liberates, design structures.

Through fragmentation, I aim to express something deeper, to speak of contradictions as well. I construct a kind of inner landscape from the relationships and fragments between parts of a piece — one that opens up meanings and moods.
Arte Povera ("poor art") has long been a guiding light for me, and I also relate “rough art” to my design practice.

AS AN ARTIST AND DESIGNER

Through re-evaluating my own art—even to the extent of physically dismantling a piece—I question the meaning of images and the act of making art. I believe that no creation is so valuable that it couldn’t be deconstructed, both metaphorically and literally, and viewed from a new perspective.

As an artist and designer, I have recognized Arte Povera as a guiding influence since the 1990s. I draw inspiration from recycled objects, textiles, and discoveries found along nature trails. The broken and rough interest me both visually and philosophically. I also incorporate this kind of “rough art” into my own design work, particularly in my installations.
