Artist’s Statement

I want to realize the images that appear in my mind, reflections of the reality I experience. Painting is a way of expression that I use to process what I see and experience. It is communication with my innermost being and the outside world. First and foremost, I am motivated by the fact that I sometimes manage to reproduce the image I have in my mind. To make visible some part of the idea and feeling that I am pursuing.

Bio

I am a Finnish painter living and working in Helsinki. I paint with oil colors and acrylics, and I sketch them by taking photographs. In recent years I’ve concentrated on painting spaces by using strong contrasts of light and shadow. Visually, I have been especially interested in shades of lights and shadows and how they create and on the other hand break the illusion of space. I try to achieve the feeling of depth, but at the same time I break the illusion by simplifying. I simplify the variations in value to dark and light surfaces, where depth is almost completely absent. I am graduated from the University of Art and Design Helsinki (currently Aalto University) as a Master of Arts in 2005. I have also studied painting in the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts and architecture in the Helsinki University of Technology. My works are included, among others, in the collections of the Aalto University, the Finnish State Art Commission and Tampere Art Museum. I’m a member of the Finnish Artist's Association and the Helsinki Artists' Association. www.anukauhaniemi.com
