Artist’s Statement

I start my working process by making the background with action painting technique to generate vivid abstraction, where the momentary comes out. The colours will run and spread free. Flowing water and acrylic colour form a variety of splotches, puddles and splashes to the painted layer. On this layer, I continue with oil colours more slowly and attentively. The abstract and figurative will meet in the same picture.

As the source of human figures and faces for my paintings I use internet images. The chosen pictures are reflections of the latest phenomena of our time.

In some of my latest works I have studied jumping peoples in abstract backgrounds. One reason for this theme is Jackson Pollock`s painting called ‘Jump In’. Pollock was an influential American painter and the leading force in the action painting movement. His art has affected me for a long time.

Jari Jänström was born 1960 in Lahti, lives and works in Helsinki. He graduated Master of Fine Arts at University of the Arts Helsinki, Academy of Fine Arts, in 2003. He has been actively participating in exhibitions in Finland and abroad. His latest private exhibition was at Galerie Pleiku in Berlin in May 2017. In May 2017, he participated in the group exhibition Reflecting Rothko, Rietumu Bank Art Gallery, Riga, Latvia. In March 2017, he took part at the 100-year-old Finland Sustainability at the United Nations Headquarters, New York, USA and the Creative Dialogue of Art, in Gallery Gorinthian, New York, USA
