Artist’s Statement

I graduated in 2011 from the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts, where I studied painting and sculpture. I work mainly with installation and objects, often including motorised or kinetic elements. My works are playful studies of daily gestures and materials, below which a conceptual depth can be found.

During the last couple of years I have developed an interest in using mechanical or motorized elements in my work. My most recent pieces are mechanical installations, where it is a movement or a gradual change that reveals new meanings in familiar materials.

Before I became fascinated with mechanical movement however, my main occupation was with material and language, and it still is. The first impulse to a new work is usually in the materiality of something very ordinary, like the damp softness of a dish cloth or the sound of crisp bread breaking. But everything is connected: the material is the embodiment of memories, emotions and cultural ideas. I thoroughly enjoy finding these complex layers in simple things. Doing art allows me to do so, and I hope my work shares this joy and the insights it produces.

In addition to my personal artistic practise I have collaborated with artist Salla Vapaavuori since 2007, for site specific work in a wide range of media. I also work with illustration and writing.

Emma Rönnholm is a visual artist based in Helsinki, Finland. She works with sculpture and installation, often featuring movement or other mechanical elements. Her artistic practise stems from a fascination for language, materials and processes, paired with a passion for mechanics and do-it-yourself.

Rönnholm graduated in 2011 from the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts, where she studied painting and sculpture. During her studies she participated in international workshops in Germany and Italy and longer student exchanges in Prague and Paris.

Since graduating she has held numerous solo and joint exhibitions, predominately in Helsinki but also in other parts of Finland (Turku, Tampere, Pori) and abroad (Italy, Germany, Sweden, Slovakia and the Czech republic). Her works are found in the collections of the Saastamoinen Foundation, the city of Turku and the Amos Anderson museum in Helsinki. In 2017 she was nominated for the Fine Arts Academy of Finlands biannual art award.
