Artist’s Statement
Sculptor sculpts with a 3d printer.
Satu-Minna Suorajärvi combines digital art with old traditions of sculpture bravely renewing them.
From her previous profession Suorajärvi is a doctor so combining things has been natural to her. While studying at the Academy of Fine Arts, she became enthusiastic about 3d modeling and after graduating acquired 3d printers.
The Passage sculptures have been completed since 2014 with 3d modeling and 3d printing. Moving human figure, relationships between people and human relationships with environment have been starting points for artworks. Human silhouettes (child, woman, man, elderly, lying human or skeleton) are 3d modeled to sculptural forms. Silhouettes change from each other and outlines of sculptures are formed.
The sculptures are 3d printed to PLA (polylactic acid), which is a bioplastic made from cornstarch. With climate change ecologic matters have become increasingly important to her. Suorajärvi is using lost PLA technique for metal metal casting and direct 3d metal printing to steel brass.
Suorajärvi teaches digital sculpture at Aalto University, is member of Kruks media art group. During this year, she has made VR (virtual reality) and AR (augmented reality) sculptures and has been teaching VR for Brighton youngsters. Public sculpture Kastehelmi with hundreds of steel balls will be completed to Satakunta Central Hospital in Pori 2018.
