Artist’s Statement

The centre of my work is improvisation and intuition. I produce images by experimenting with and developing simple techniques. I am also educated as an artesan blacksmith so technical work and handcrafts are natural to me. Building things and working with old machines and apparata, among filmwork is a part of my artisthood.

In my work I often deal with human behaviour and the problems around this species. I deal with these themes honestly, within the boundaries of my understanding.

The rhythm of a moving image, the movement and details of an image along with constantly changing image composition intrigue me. Therefore I also produce abstract experimental animation.

The material in itself and the image sequences, the illusion of movement, the suprising outcomes and the interaction with the work in progress are the most rewarding aspects of my work as an artist.

Bio

Niina Suominen (b. 1973) lives and works in Merimasku, South-Western Finland.

Suominen works as visual and media artist using simple techniques requiring handcraft. She is impressed by the works of pioneering masters of experimental animation from 1920's to 1950's.

Suominen was educated in the traditional techniques of animation making (Animation director, Turku Arts Academy, 2004). In her work she is fascinated with reflecting on traditional rules of animation and figuring out ways to break or subvert them.
