Artist’s Statement

TATJANA BERGELT
artist’s statement

I moved to Finland 1998.
Having a multicultural background – German – Russian – Jewish, the need of communication and the difficulty of achieving it, despite the experience of several languages - verbal and visual – have become driving forces in my working process. Using collage and different print techniques, with the help of fragmentation, I am creating stories and relations between the visible and imagined worlds. In my artists’ books I like to use texts by living authors and reinvent found material. My work relates to time, history and the human being as such.

I have been doing an artists' book project with my Japanease colleage Ryoko Adachi, who has been working in the finnish guest ateljee in Tapiola, Espoo for one month. Our book is using the first Rune of the epos Kalevala, the story of Ilmatar, the Eathers daugther. It is printed in stone lithography and woodcut, edition of 6, jap. binding, presented in a birch box. It will be exhibited in Frankfurt this october among my other artists' books.
