Artist’s Statement

In her paintings, Tuula Anttonen pictures human beings in both isolation and in social interactions with each other. Situations are constructed where power plays and abuse are clearly depicted as well as longing for connection and togetherness. Anttonen constructs her characters sparsely, considering the influence of drawing on painting: the quality of line, the colour of pencil, the grids on paper have become elements in the painting as well.

Bio

Tuula Anttonen (born 1970 in Raahe, Finland) has graduated from Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts de Bourges, France, and from University of Industrial Arts in Helsinki, Finland in 1997. Anttonen works in Helsinki. She has had 16 solo shows and participated in group shows in Finland and abroad. She has worked in residencies in Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and the United States.
