ABOVE/BELOW, 2020

is an experimental audiovisual installation in which the soundscape is created by touching organic and synthetic materials. Sounds mimic the sea by creating an atmosphere of an underwater world where the nature of the materials affects the tone of the sound. Kokko collected and asked the residents of the Baltic Sea region to send materials found on the beach and the sea. The soundscape consists of BIAS project audio files as well as the artist´s own recordings from the Baltic Sea. BIAS (Baltic Sea Information on the Acoustic Soundscape)- project studied how much and what kind of sounds are heard in different parts of the Baltic Sea. The research collected sound by placing hydrophones, underwater microphones, on the seabed at a depth of 30 to 90 meters. 38 hydrophones recorded in different parts of the Baltic Sea during one year.
In the work, the artist reflects on the human relationship and its impact on nature, and deals with ecological values and issues related to humanity. Kokko utilizes his own experiences from the island of Utö and the Baltic Sea, which have been the subject of his art in the past as well.
The art work is part of the Association for Rural Culture and Education´s Citytorppari- project.
