The male sphinx has the small wings of a butterfly: it has just emerged from its cocoon and is ready to embrace its new life. Even though it is now a clumsy pup, learning things from scratch, nothing diminishes the fact that it went through a demanding transformation to achieve its form. The work depicts the time after self-harming, when an individual has decided to live rather than die.
