"Fat Man" was the codename for the nuclear bomb that was detonated over the Japanese city of Nagasaki by the United States on 9 August 1945. The Fat Man was round and fat and was named after Sydney Greenstreet's character in The Maltese Falcon. Oppenheimer assembled a group of the top physicists of the time, which he referred to as the "luminaries".
