Maria Huhmarniemi: Himmeli IV

Keywords: himmeli, olki

I have made Himmeli-sculptures from traditional decorations that my mom has made from rye and lake straws. Himmeli is made of short strips of rye straw tied together with strings to form a complex and symmetrical three-dimensional structure. Himmeli is a traditional, old Finnish ornament hanging from ceiling but it is also known in Middle-Europe and other Nordic countries than Finland. The word himmeli origins to German word ”himmel” meaning heaven. I underline the influence from other countries to Finnish culture.
