Pauli Ahopelto: Ovipeili – The Door Mirror
Exhibited in Kamppi (Ruoholahden Villat, Helsinki) in 2015–2016, and at the Näkymä environmental art event in Akaa in 2016.
Ovipeili is situated along a boundary fence between ancient and urban forms of construction. Composed of recycled mirrored doors, the work responds to the flow of the city and transforms the fence into a portal.
Each door bears a carved figure — like a trace of a reflected human presence. The work weaves imaginative narratives into its surroundings. A door is not merely a passageway, but a liminal space where stopping and moving forward coexist.
Does the door invite entry, or does it repel? Where does the journey lead now? A doorway distinguishes one space from another, while also creating a connection between two contrasting environments — the old and the new. Symbolically, the door functions as an interface between the spiritual and the physical worlds. It is a critical point of transition: a threshold associated with profound thoughts, memories, possibilities, hope — but also longing and consolation.
