Bio

Riikka Kupsala graduated as Bachelor of Fine Arts from TUAS Arts Academy in 2017. She had a solo exhibition titled To Be Seen at Köysirata Gallery in Turku as her artistic diploma work. For that exhibition she made four video works about beauty routines. Since graduation Kupsala has presented her artworks in solo or group exhibitions annually in Finland.

Kupsala's art addresses the problematic nature of overconsumption and the sustainability of consumption from a personal perspective. Her media of expression include textiles and video, and she also utilizes elements of activism, participatory art, performance, and data in her expression.

In 2020, Kupsala examined her consumerism through beauty care and clothing in her solo exhibition Consumer Intervention. The exhibition featured two video installations and one multi-part work, constructed from pages of an applied inventory list, video, wall hanging and Instagram posts. The exhibition was on display at B-gallery in Turku.

Since then, Kupsala has examined the issue of the sustainability of consumption in the context of clothing, and fashion industry, first in the exhibition Weight of Fabric at Galleria Huuto in Helsinki and Galleria Rajatila in Tampere in 2023, and then in the exhibition Consuming Clothes at Galleria Aski in Turku in 2025. Both exhibitions consisted of textile and video works that illustrate personal knowledge about dressing and clothing. In the Consuming Clothes -exhibition, the works ask how clothes are consumed and what clothes consume.

Kupsala’s artistic work have been supported by TOP-Säätiö (2018), The Finnish Cultural Foundation Varsinais-Suomi Regional Fund (2020, 2024), Arts Promotion Centre Finland (2021, 2023), City of Turku (2022, 2026), The VISEK Centre for the Promotion of Visual Art (2023) and Finnish Arts and Culture Agency (2026).
