For a couple of years, I painted works featuring urban birds.
In my work as an urban planner, I had too often encountered
the marginalization of nature, and I wanted to evoke
compassion for our fellow creatures. While working on this
subject, a metamorphosis took place — a conceptual and
visual shift from free-roaming birds to my own identity
and an internal self-portrait. The theme evolved into the
mental landscapes of an aging woman.
In the work *Miss’ soutaen tuulessa* ("Rowing in the Wind"),
one can see this metamorphosis from birds into an internal
self-portrait — specifically, into a power transmission
pylon.
