Artist's Statement

I am a landscape painter by vocation and a through-and-through expressionist. I paint with charcoal and oil pastels that I make myself. At times, I long to work with something that allows me to use physical force. This longing gives rise to my three-dimensional works: installations and sculptures.
Music and architecture are present in my paintings. I dance the landscape I paint; I sing the line. I do not experience myself as painting a landscape, but rather the space and rhythm it offers.
As I work, the elements of my paintings become abstract instruments — matter moving through space. Wind, water and light become forces that I need in order to paint, and from these forces my works emerge without a predetermined plan, like sketches.

I paint landscapes – allegories and states of mind. Currently I am exploring through painting the inner landscape of an aging woman and how it takes shape when she no longer defines herself through external expectations. This series of works combines expressive landscape painting with themes of aging, years of experience, and specific working methods and materials. At the same time, it opens up a new direction. The work is rooted in my own life stage as a 70-year-old woman, yet I aim to capture something universal and recognizable. The series expands the conversation about which life stages and experiences are visible and significant.

Bio

Inkeri Makkonen (b. 1956, Finland) is a Finnish visual artist and architect whose practice is rooted in expressionist landscape painting. Before devoting herself to art, she worked as an urban planner. For more than four decades, her artistic practice has been characterised by a sustained exploration of materiality and space. She paints using ecological materials of her own making, developing her methods through a direct and experimental engagement with the material.



Makkonen’s work has been presented in 71 exhibitions, including 17 international exhibitions, and is represented in the collections of foundations, the Finnish State, the Helsinki Art Museum, and the Olympic Fine Arts collection. Over the course of her career, her subject matter has gradually shifted from urban nature towards an increasingly intimate exploration of the inner landscape of an ageing woman.
