Annukka Mikkola: Aomame – Within the Aomame installation
The old recycled dolls that I often include in my works reflect the fragility of human life and the narrative nature of play — a play that doesn't simply end when the doll play stops and the doll is abandoned.
Aomame’s story is woven into Haruki Murakami’s novel 1Q84, and through it, I mirror my own “story of otherness”: the journey from doll play to womanhood, to motherhood, and to parenthood.
I believe that within all of this lies my deepest and most challenging “school of learning,” even though I hold two master’s degrees in visual and textile arts at the university level.
To me, the school of life is the most significant and meaningful education a person can receive.
