Svetlana Ruoho: Being playfyl
My work presents a contemporary view of a woman in front of a mirror. I reflect on femininity, the pursuit of external beauty, and the desire for acceptance from others. These themes are closely connected to feelings of inadequacy, security, and love.
In art history, the image of a woman before a mirror is often idealized. My work reveals a more intimate side of beauty — one that belongs to everyday life. I use a selfie self-portrait, as self-portraiture is the closest and most natural form of expression for me as an artist. It gives me the freedom to explore and interpret the subject with a touch of irony, without fear of offending anyone.
The piece combines photography and painting. The contrast between the precision of the photograph and the expressive freedom of paint strengthens the work’s visual language and highlights its underlying idea.
