Pekka Kaikkonen: “Grammichele 10”

Completion year: 2024
Technique: mixed media on canvas( quartz sand, adhesive, putty, charcoal, acrylic paint )
Size: 103cm x 103cm x 4cm
I visited Sicily in the sweltering heat of August 2017. I drew inspiration for my work from the town of Grammichele, which was built in 1693 with a preplanned, circular layout. The spacious central square, Piazza Carafa, is the focal point of the area. Main streets radiate outwards from the square, while cross-streets intersect to form a hexagonal pattern around it. Grammichele is one of the few "ideal cities" of 17th-century urban planning in the world to have remained largely in its original form.
