Pekka Kaikkonen: ”Purjehtiva muuri – hommage à M/S Estonia”

Completion year: 1994
Technique: red granite
Size: 300cm x ( 15cm 40cm ) x 220cm, jalusta 20cm x 20cm x 80cm
28.9.1994 at 5:00, granite transport from Loimaa arrived to Helsinki. The whole night had tired and rained tremendously. When I received the stone cargo, I heard a shocking news from the trucks; the car ferry Estonia had sunk in the hurricane a moment earlier to the Baltic Sea. I had a solo exhibition in Gallery Sculptor in Helsinki from 16.11 to 4.12.1994. I got permission to place my work "Sailing wall", remembering the victims of Estonia, on the lawn of the Old Church park next to the art gallery.

The work will be permanently installed in the Kerava Sculpture Park next to Kivisillantie in 2021. The background of the work is the arched stone bridge completed in 1908, designed by J.A.Blomqvist and built by stoneman Verlander from Kerava.
