Digital Naturalism Conference 26.6.-7.7.2025

Art and Science Conference with Sea Community, Les, Bali, Indonesia

WEDUSA project

The astonishing underwater world and the cornucopia of the coastal village of Les in Bali inspired this tantalising experiment at the fourth Digital Naturalism Conference. In these artworks, I strive to create space and opportunities for arresting encounters, interaction and wonder. We experience the world around us both directly through our senses and indirectly via technology. I seek a change of perspective by working with the other-than-human, including the ocean, a waterfall and an organic garden.

The workshop I organised was based on asemic writing, where signs are released from symbolic meaning. Drawing, as a sign system, has the potential to liberate interpretation. In their asemic writing participants discovered dolphins, a flying bird, a motorcycle and even the bug of the day #BOTD.

The waves of the immense ocean carried to the shore the wondrous creatures of marine life, but also the colourful man-made glass debris, which I call sea glass. I combined these elements in the artwork entitled ‘Peek Inside’, where the colour-changing sea glass MEDUSA is inspired by natural forms.

In WEDUSA projects, discussions have consistently turned to the core issues of human-induced environmental change. It is time for a shared aesthetic, for an ecological and economic vision that facilitates systemic change. Let’s act together, WE are the village or DESA.
