Medusa, Sea Glass and Other Wanderers

¨They cannot be seen immediately. Viewed from the Pleiades the shards of glass on the shores of Harakka Island reveal themselves as a mirror image¨

The origin of sea glass is difficult to trace. It may have wandered the world’s seas for centuries. Well, the glass that form the material of the Medusa sculptures are unlikely to originate in Mesopotamia, where 7,000-year-old glass objects have been discovered.

In a possible world, however, the age-old sea glass has found its way back to its origin. The ancient sea has been captured by the island and caught in the centre of Harakka, where it has shrunk into a freshwater pond surrounded by alder trees.

The pearl grey of the Forerunner photograms in the exhibition evokes the colour of the sea. Like asteroids or the gradual bone formation of a developing paw, they continue their formation as well as sea glass as a Medusa sculpture. The origin of the Forerunner photogram images is unknown and their progress unpredictable. At some particular point in time and place, we encounter a piece with a diameter of 50 mm or 15 km. Coincidentally or through a polished lens.
