Merja Briñón: Sukukokous – The Family Meeting
The Family Meeting is a narration about roots, the importance of one’s own cultural background and externality. We are products of our own culture, but not dictated by our history. The artwork researches different periods of finding yourself and your own way to live in a changing environment. The Family Meeting is based on the artist's personal experiences and stories collected among Nordic, Baltic and Russian women. The installation is built utilising the belongings of the artist's late grandmother, Esteri Miettinen, painted pieces, glass, wood, stones, and daily food products, salt and sugar, which also have strong symbolic meanings.
