Pekka Kaikkonen: “Grammichele 23”

Completion year: 2026
Technique: mixed media on canvas (quartz sand, adhesive, putty, charcoal, acrylic paint )
Size: 103cm x 103cm x 4cm
In August 2015, I visited the town of Grammichele in Sicily, which was built in 1693 as a circular city plan. The large hexagonal Piazza Carafa is the center of the milieu. The main streets radiate from the square and the side streets intersect rhythmically around it, following the shape of the hexagon. Grammichele is one of the few "ideal cities" of the 17yh century city plain in the world that have survived almost in their original form.
