An Extract of Koneita ja ihmisiä – Machines and People – Dialogue, Anna-Leena Vilhunen (answers) and Jussi A. Saarinen (questions). Jussi A. Saarinen is a philosopher interested in artistic creativity and paintersexperiences of painting:

When Im out and spot an excavator, I dont see it precisely, I cant identify the model or manufacturer, nor am I interested in its technical details. My head is also turned by little children. I make observations of fleeting moments, usually about the commonplace and the ugly. By means of painting Im able to modify my artworks freely. I want to cross boundaries.

As I make new layers, the painted surface acquires three-dimensional mass, its thickness and thinness are conscious choices. My work involves an expressive digging of depths, I compare it to the use of excavators and drilling rigs. I search for something to dig up, something of which I have a visual scent, memory or experience.
