INTER, Jurmo – The Sea Listens in Us was an outdoor installation beside Jurmo chapel and cemetery. A bench facing the sea offered a place to listen to recorded voices, music composed from the chapel’s pump organ and the surrounding environment.
The work grew from conversations and shared recordings with island residents and others closely connected to Jurmo. Alongside the concrete loudspeakers, three headphone listening points offered narration in Finnish, Swedish and English.
Presented on Jurmo, 16 June–14 September 2026, as part of the John Nurminen Foundation’s Meren puolella programme.
Concept, recordings, composition and installation: Jaakko Autio.
Narration: Hilla Väyrynen, Tiina Johansson and Aino Mattsson.
