Harmony in Displacement is Part III of the Border Series. It was shown at the Haihatus Summer Exhibition in Joutsa in 2024.
In Joutsa, Ukrainian residents and local collaborators gathered to sing an old Ukrainian lullaby, The Dream Passes by the Window. Twenty people came to the recording, and their individual voices remain audible in the finished work. The session included children, teenagers and adults. I kept the uncertain starts, jokes, impatience and small moments of agreement rather than correcting the recording into a polished choir.
The installation occupied the outdoor amphitheatre at Haihatus beside Panu Ollikainen's Saattoväki. Twenty white loudspeakers carried the voices into the summer air. A listener could stay with one person's singing or hear the group from farther away.
Concept and sound: Jaakko Autio. Choir facilitation: Anna Voutilainen-Veijonen.
