Satu Laurel: Battle of The Roses #2
This painting is a part of my newest series "Battle of the Roses”
In this new series of works, torn and scattered roses lie on the battlefield while also posing on stage. Radical beauty squeezes between ideological and practical. Abstract strokes emphasize materiality and overturn ideas: abstraction here turns to representative — a still life.
Everywhere we look, there are different levels of conflict — even battles. Everyday life collides with dreams, ideologies with realism, and values with other values. The flowers bring a feminist perspective to the center — almost unintentionally. They reflect ideological collisions: nostalgia seeking to preserve traditions and hierarchies, and liberalism driving reform, freedom, and equality.
The ongoing struggle for equality is not only political but also visual and symbolic: what is seen, and whose voice is heard.
