Minna Väisänen: Helsingin Sanomien tuoreet 2009 / Helsingin Sanomat Front Pages 2009
The front page of a newspaper – which in the case of Helsingin Sanomat is actually the third page, the so-called 'news front page' – can be regarded a window into the content and worldview of the paper. Today, pictures play a prominent part on the pages of this, the largest-circulation newspaper in Finland. What do these pictures tell us about the world and about the values and worldview of the paper?
In 2009, I made a series of paintings on the front page of Helsingin Sanomat. I also compiled a list of the roles of the people appearing on these pages. The entire project can be regarded as a conceptual work of art, one possible interpretation of the flow of images and roles presented daily by the biggest newspaper in Finland.
